Awards and nominations have been showered on this South Korean TV series about the life and love of one of Korea's greatest Kings. This fictional drama is an incredible 77 episodes long and focuses on the intricacies of Court life during the reign of King Jing Jeongio, the 22nd ruler of the Joseon Dynasty. Despite its length you will not get bored as you find yourself being drawn into the magnificence of the whole setting and the compelling story of the King's relationship with his beautiful concubine Song Yeon. If you are looking to get acquainted with Korean sageuk (period costume drama) then this is the one to start with.

Japanese Taiga Drama made by NHK is a lengthy 50 episodes and chronicles the life story of Atsu-Hime who at a very young age became the wife of Tokugawa Iesada, the 13th shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate. She accedes to the highest rank in Ooku, the inner palace of the Edo castle where women related to the reigning shogun resided. Iesada dies childless soon after their marriage and Atsu-Hime remains in the shogun's castle.
